A Level For Every Student

Four children happily reading books while sitting on a bookshelf.

PRIMER (Pre K -1)

Consonant Sounds and Short Vowels ONLY (for non- readers)

Gradually introduces the 5 short vowel sounds of apple /a/, elephant /e/, igloo /i/, octopus /o/, and umbrella /u/ with the sounds of the single consonants, which are also gradually introduced.  The initial lesson only teaches b, f, h, j, k, m, p, t with the short apple /a/ and igloo /i/ for reading and spelling.

Principle:  There is no reason a beginner reader needs to learn all the sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet before learning to read and spell words.

CORE Level I

Level I gradually introduces and practices to mastery the following phonics skills:

Single Consonants, Blends, Digraphs, with the short vowel sounds (apple /a/, elephant /e/, igloo /i/, octopus /o/, and umbrella /u/) Silent e and the Vowel Reference Card most common vowel sounds (ea, au, aw, ai, ay, ee, igh, oa, ow, ew, oo, r-controlled, oi, and oy) all learned and mastered by Reading Review columns, compound words, and multisyllable sections,

Level I emphasizes the DOLCH Sight Vocabulary for reading and spelling.

Nonsense Syllables are introduced to have the student read and spell actual syllables of real words.

“Principle:  To learn to use phonics as a tool, the student must read and spell words unknown to the student!”

Learn to Read Phonetically Story Books, Collections 1-14

(Story numbers 1 to 67 with Dolch Words only for Level I - #27 stories.)These accompany CORE lessons, gradually introducing the phonics skills taught, with words to practice before reading the stories and followed by comprehension questions.

CORE Level II

All of the above for Level I, but now focusing on the Level II word lists.

Reading Review Level II

Spelling Level II ..Extensive word list!

Level II Nonsense Syllables

Reading Story Collections 1-12, picking up the Non Dolch stories that read previously in Level I (#30)

Transition: Level I to Level II

A student that starts out doing Level I, can go through each lesson learning Level I words and reading the easier DOLCH word stories.

They can then restart the CORE program at Level II, reviewing the phonics rules learned, and applying their skills to the longer, more complex lists of Level II.  They can also go back to Collection 1 of the Learn to Read stories and read the books written using more complex words.

MASTERY Level III

Successful completion of CORE Level II Spelling leads directly into MASTERY Spelling Lists,  Sections in Morphology, a more extensive Vowel Reference Card, Reading Review III, Compound Words, Multisyllable III, and the final Collections of Learn to Read Phonetically 15-17.

You have completed Schuler Phonics and a Bright Future Awaits!  Happy Reading!

Congratulations From the Schuler Phonics Family!
